Miruna Turbatu, a Journalism student at “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University in Iași and participant in the Ratiu Forum Journalism Mentorship Programme, writes about the life and legacy of Ion Rațiu.
“Perhaps the most important part of Ion Rațiu’s cultural legacy consists of the experience that the politician left to posterity in the form of memoirs. “My father kept an almost daily journal from the moment he arrived in the United Kingdom in March 1940 until he died on January 17, 2000“, Nicolae Rațiu explains to me. “We managed to publish all this work of many years, except for the period 1978-1989, which we plan to address in the future. We are talking about a unique, objective account of his political life and his role in Romania’s history, as he lived it as a Romanian during a 40-year period of exile. The culmination is found in the last 10 years of his life, in the stories from the heart of Romanian politics following his return to the country in the ’90s.” These volumes of memoirs are placed throughout the Rațiu Center for Democracy and in the accommodation spaces within the guesthouse, for those curious visitors who want to learn more about the politician’s life and work.”
